The IRCM Foundation is pleased to announce an exceptional contribution by the Marcelle and Jean Coutu Foundation to its major fundraising campaign, Give for Life. The amount of $1,000,000 was donated to support the next generation of scientists at the IRCM. It will allow the institute to grant scholarships to the highest-calibre postdoctoral fellows.
“The Marcelle and Jean Coutu Foundation is very happy to support the IRCM’s next generation of researchers and participate in these young scientists’ international reach,” said the Foundation’s President, Marie-Josée Coutu, during a recent visit to the IRCM.
The Jean-Coutu scholarship is intended for a young researcher pursuing postdoctoral studies. It recognizes the winner’s high level of scientific knowledge and the exceptional quality of his/her research work. This million-dollar donation increased the capitalization of the existing Jean-Coutu Fund. As a result, a greater number of prestigious scholarships can be granted.
“This sum brings the total amount raised to date for the IRCM Foundation’s Give for Life campaign to 10 million dollars,” stated Tarik Möröy, the IRCM’s President and Scientific Director, and Hélène Véronneau, Director of the IRCM Foundation. “We wish to sincerely thank the Marcelle and Jean Coutu Foundation for this generous donation.”
“Receiving a scholarship is very important to us,” added Marine Lacomme, postdoctoral fellow supervised by Dr. Michel Cayouette and recipient of the 2012 scholarship. “It allows us to dedicate ourselves entirely to our research. I would like to thank the Marcelle and Jean Coutu for their support.”
For several years, the Jean Coutu Group has been making concrete gestures to improve the quality of life of the communities it serves. Through the Marcelle and Jean Coutu Foundation, it especially supports organizations working in the health and education sectors.
