Research Assistant, Molecular Biology and Functional Genomics core facility

Founded in 1967, the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) is a non-profit organization that conducts basic and clinical biomedical research while training the next generation of scientists in an innovative environment. The Institute is a clinical and biomedical research center affiliated to the Université de Montréal bringing together nearly 450 people: investigators, students, postdoctoral trainees and administrative personnel.

Summary of responsibilities

Reporting to the core facility manager, the candidate will provide specialized services in Molecular Biology to research team members at the IRCM. He/she will perform recurring experiments such as standard SANGER sequencing, genotyping (SNPs, mutation / deletion, gene expression by Q- PCR or fragment analysis) and next generation sequencing (samples quality controls, library preparation and quality controls). This work includes the synthesis and interpretation of results.
He/she will closely collaborate with the platform team members, the research unit directors and their students in solving genomic related problematics.

More specifically the candidate will:

  • Execute protocols associated to samples submitted to the core facility. Maintain a standard of precision and quality required by the core facility;
  • Master and control equipment used with these protocols (Nanodrop, PCR, Q-PCR, Genetic Analyzer, Bioanalyzer, chromium 10X Genomics...). Master data analysis dedicated softwares;
  • Assess the quality of the obtained results, identify any potential technical problems, elaborate and set up necessary corrections;
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and inventory of the stocks; document samples and procedures used, instruments used and results obtained;
  • Place orders for necessary consumables;
  • Communicate to users the results with supporting documents;
  • Set up new methods requested by research groups (bibliography and technology watch).

Required qualifications

  • B.Sc. in biological sciences or M.Sc. in molecular biology (or biochemistry) and at least 3 years experience in a molecular biology laboratory or service, including experience in next generation sequencing;
  • Team spirit, excellent communications skills (written and spoken) in French and English.

Knowledge and kills

  • Thorough theory understanding of the genomics and the genetics;
  • Recognized experience in nucleic acids preparation: extraction, purification, quantification and quality analysis (Nanodrop, Qubit, Covaris, Bioanalyzer);
  • Skills demonstrated in PCR, Q-PCR, SANGER sequencing, genotyping and libraries for NGS: implementation, validation, analysis and instrumentation, skills in single cell would be an asset;
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Autonomy, motivation, rigour and adaptability.

Working conditions

  • Full-time position (35 hours/week)
  • Life and health insurance plans
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
