Research Assistant, Molecular Biology and Functional Genomics core facility

Summary of responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Molecular Biology and Functional Genomics Core Facility manager, the candidate will provide specialized services in Molecular Biology to research team members at the IRCM. He/she will perform recurring experiments such as standard SANGER sequencing, genotyping (SNPs, mutation / deletion, gene expression by Q- PCR or fragment analysis) and next generation sequencing (samples quality controls, library preparation and quality controls). This work includes the synthesis and interpretation of results. 
  • He/she will closely collaborate with the platform team members, the research unit directors and their students in solving genomic related problematics. 

More specifically the candidate will:

  • Execute protocols associated to samples submitted to the core facility. Maintain a standard of precision and quality required by the core facility;
  • Master and control equipment used with these protocols (Nanodrop, PCR, Q-PCR, Genetic Analyzer, Bioanalyzer, chromium 10X Genomics...). Master data analysis dedicated softwares;
  • Assess the quality of the obtained results, identify any potential technical problems, elaborate and set up necessary corrections;
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and inventory of the stocks; document samples and procedures used, instruments used and results obtained; 
  • Place orders for necessary consumables;
  • Communicate to users the results with supporting documents;
  • Set up new methods requested by research groups (bibliography and technology watch).

Required qualifications 

  • B.Sc. in biological sciences or M.Sc. in molecular biology (or biochemistry) and at least 3 years experience in a molecular biology laboratory or service, including experience in next generation sequencing;
  • Team spirit, excellent communications skills (written and spoken) in French and English.

Knowledge and skills 

  • Thorough theory understanding of the genomics and the genetics;
  • Recognized experience in nucleic acids preparation: extraction, purification, quantification and quality analysis (Nanodrop, Qubit, Covaris, Bioanalyzer);
  • Skills demonstrated in PCR, Q-PCR, SANGER sequencing, genotyping and libraries for NGS: implementation, validation, analysis and instrumentation, skills in single cell would be an asset;
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Autonomy, motivation, rigour and adaptability;
