The IRCM applauds a substantial and constructive work
The Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) welcomes the publication of the report by the Expert Panel for the Review of the Federal Approach to Scientific Advice and Coordination of Pandemic Research, which included Dr. Éric A. Cohen, Director of the IRCM's Human Retrovirology Research Unit. This substantial report is the result of in-depth work involving more than 300 consultations with experts, as well as the analysis of multiple pieces of documentation relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, which heavily impacted the Canadian society and is still being felt at many levels.
Entitled Report of the Expert Panel for the Review of the Federal Approach to Pandemic Science Advice and Research Coordination: The Time to Act Is Now, the document is aligned with the panel's specific mandate to review the federal approach to scientific guidance and coordination of pandemic research. Led by Sir Mark Walport , a leading British health expert, the panel, makes a series of recommendations for dealing with potential health crises. The panel's recommendations include the need for a more sophisticated national risk assessment and preparedness planning process; a more robust scientific advisory system ready to be activated in short notice in the event of an emergency; a permanent research infrastructure ready to be mobilized; a centralized leadership to facilitate the prioritization and coordination of major public research investments; and improved health data systems.
“I'm delighted to see one of our eminent researchers devoting his time and energy in this way for the common good,” said Dr. Jean-François Côté, President and Scientific Director of the IRCM, adding: “The pandemic has left tangible traces on our society, and preparing ourselves for another possible crisis requires a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of this major episode.”
