Offered Programs

Choose the program that best suits you and start your journey toward a rewarding career in research.

We offer the opportunity to apply for one of our three graduate programs.

Option 1 – Master's Program: A traditional pathway offering solid training with the flexibility to transition into a PhD, depending on your aspirations.

Option 2 – Graduate Training with Rotations for Accelerated PhD Access: An exclusive IRCM program for exceptional candidates with a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent). This program offers the opportunity to complete two laboratory rotations at the IRCM, as well as intensive training modules on our technological platforms, leading to a faster transition to the PhD.

Option 3 – PhD Program: A traditional pathway for those with a master's degree (or equivalent), providing solid training tailored to all profiles. If you are an exceptional bachelor’s student with substantial research experience, you may apply directly to the PhD program.

Option 1
Master’s Program

The research-based master’s program allows you to begin specializing in scientific research, preparing you for either the job market or doctoral studies. This program primarily consists of full-time research activities where you will have the opportunity to work on a project assigned to you. The program also includes theoretical courses and culminates in the writing of a thesis. The average duration of a master’s is two years.

Eligibility Criteria

Passion for science and a strong interest in pursuing a career in biomedical research.

A university degree in a relevant biomedical science field (e.g., biology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, neuroscience, etc.).

A competitive academic record:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.3 out of 4.3 or higher (or equivalent; see the Université de Montréal or McGill University website);
  • Relevant research experience (e.g., research internships) will be considered an asset;
  • Planning to start your studies in September 2025 or January 2026 (study permit processing times for international students may vary).

You can still apply to this program if you do not meet all the criteria listed above. While academic performance and research experience are important selection criteria, life experience as an individual from a minority group, a person with a disability, from a disadvantaged community, a low socioeconomic background, or as a caregiver is also considered. If this applies to you, please briefly mention it in your cover letter.

For the 2024-2025 academic year, all Master’s students will receive a minimum annual stipend of $22,285 + tuition fees (variable from year to year). All scholarships are reviewed annually by the Graduate Studies Committee.

This program, intended for those holding a master’s degree (or equivalent), has an average duration of 5 years. Upon completion, you will be required to write a thesis presenting the results of your research project and defend it before a jury.

In several disciplines, it is possible to transition directly from a bachelor’s degree to a PhD. To do so, you must have an exceptional academic record and research experience. Additionally, you will need to complete at least 9 additional credits as part of your PhD program.

Program details

The Master’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Medicine is an accelerated one-year program that allows students to transition to a PhD without writing a thesis.

Students complete two intensive four-month internships to gain different experiences in two different IRCM laboratories.

The program includes several theoretical courses in molecular biology while offering concrete opportunities to learn different techniques on IRCM’s technological platforms (bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, flow cytometry, imaging and microscopy, and in vivo models).

Students gain exposure to the different aspects of clinical research in courses taught by clinician-researchers.

Since the IRCM is a bilingual environment and the MCM option welcomes students from all over the world, the vast majority of the courses are in English. However, since this option is offered by Université de Montréal, all work and examinations may also be written in French.

At the IRCM, all students selected for the MCM master’s program receive an annual scholarship of $27,000. With the support of members of the Academic Affairs department, students are also encouraged to submit their applications to the various external scholarship competitions.

By the end of the program, they can transition to the doctoral program (PhD) or obtain a master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Molecular Biology, Molecular and Cellular Medicine option, from Université de Montréal.

Application Form

Procedure to submit your application:

  1. Complete the application form, which should include your cover letter, CV, and transcripts (unofficial documents are accepted).
  2. Your cover letter must include the names of three supervisors whose research projects interest you. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the various research themes offered by our researchers here. We strongly encourage you to contact the supervisors in advance to express your interest and discuss the possibility of a specific research topic. Special circumstances (e.g., parental leave, illnesses, etc.) can be explained in your cover letter.
  3. One or two reference letters (one letter for Option 2 and two letters for Option 3) must be sent directly to us from individuals able to assess your potential for a career in biomedical research. These letters must be sent by email to affaires.academiques@ircm.qc.ca. You should not send these letters yourself. If you have completed a research internship, at least one letter should come from your internship supervisor.

When the selection committee, consisting of IRCM researchers and members of the Academic Affairs team, has reviewed the applications, you will be contacted by email if you are selected.

If you are selected and accepted into our recruitment program, you will need to go through the admission process of the Université de Montréal or McGill University. You will follow specific courses related to your chosen field of study, depending on the department of the supervisor you select. Our Academic Affairs service will assist you if you are a non-French speaker and wish to enroll at the Université de Montréal.
