Volunteer participants wanted to participate in a research project comparing a low-carbohydrate diet to a standard diet in people living with type 1 diabetes and using an automated insulin delivery system (AID).
Investigators:
Dr Rémi Rabasa-Lhoret – Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM)
Dr Anne-Sophie Brazeau RD, PhD, McGill University
To be eligible to this project, you must:
• Have had type 1 diabetes for more than one year
• Be over 18 years of age
• Have been using an artificial pancreas system for more than 3 months
• Not already on a low carbohydrate diet
This study involves 8 visits (virtual or in person) that can take place over 1 year:
• An initial visit takes place either at the IRCM or by phone/video conference to determine your eligibility. This visit lasts approximately 2 hours
• Visits will mainly take place with a dietician. You will be assigned to a diet (low carb or standard). The goal is to observe the time in the glycemic targets 3 months after starting the diet. The following months are intended to evaluate the adherence to the assigned diet in the long term.
• 5 visits will take place in the first 3 months of the study and 3 in the following 9 months.
• You will be able to contact the dietician at any time during the study.
All visits can be made either at the IRCM or remotely.
During this study, you will continue to use your own artificial pancreas system with your usual blood glucose target and other features customized to your preferences. We will ask you to share your blood glucose results with our research team.
Expected benefits: Opportunity to update your nutritional knowledge related to type 1 diabetes, treatment optimization and access to qualified dietician throughout the study.
Financial compensation will be offered during the project.
