Aerobic exercise in adults living with type 1 diabetes using a do-it-yourself automated insulin delivery system

Evaluating the appropriate blood glucose target before and during moderate intensity aerobic exercise in adults with type 1 diabetes using do-it-yourself automated insulin delivery (AID) systems: the GUARDIA study.

The IRCM clinic is looking for participants to take part in the GUARDIA research project. Our study, led by Dr. Rabasah-Lhoret and his team, aims to investigate the effectiveness of 3 different glycemic targets to prevent hypoglycemia surrounding aerobic type physical activity in individuals with type 1 diabetes using a do-it-yourself automated insulin delivery system.

Implication

This study involves 4 visits to the IRCM that will take place over a maximum of 4 months.

  • The admission visit: The first visit will be used to sign the consent form and answer questions about your medical history. This visit will also involve anthropometric measurements (weight, height, waist circumference), resting blood pressure measurements and an exercise test on a stationary bicycle. It will last approximately 3.5 hours.

  • Visits 2, 3 and 4: Intervention visits will involve performing a stationary bike exercise session. Each visit will last approximately 2.5 hours.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Have had type 1 diabetes for more than 1 year
  • Be between 18 and 65 years of age
  • Use a continuous glucose monitoring system
  • Use an automated do-it-yourself insulin delivery system
  • Have a smartphone or tablet
