About this conference
Diabetes mellitus is characterized by dysregulated insulin and glucagon secretion from the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Relative to our understanding of nutrient-stimulated insulin release from pancreatic beta cells, much less is known about the metabolic regulation of glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells. This seminar will discuss nutrient regulation of the alpha cell, with a focus on the mechanisms by which specific macronutrients activate and inhibit glucagon secretion. We will discuss the roles of glycolysis and the mitochondrial PEP cycle in controlling alpha cell excitability, as well as nutrient regulation of cAMP signaling and glucagon secretion.
