Assistant Director, Building & Engineering Systems

Position overview
We are looking for an experienced Assistant Director of Building & Engineering Systems to oversee the maintenance, optimization, and continuous improvement of our facility’s critical infrastructure. The successful candidate will assist the Director of Engineering and Animal facilities in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of our building systems, including commercial electricity, mechanical systems, power plant HVAC, and related infrastructure.

Key responsabilities

  • Oversee and coordinate maintenance and operations of all building systems, including electrical, mechanical, and HVAC infrastructures.
  • Assist in managing engineering projects from planning to execution, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices.
  • Supervise technical teams, contractors, and service providers to ensure quality performance and adherence to maintenance schedules.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and enhance system efficiency.
  • Support energy management and sustainability initiatives to optimize facility operations.
  • Assist with budgeting, procurement, and cost analysis for engineering-related projects and maintenance activities.
  • Utilize project management software and CAD tools to support planning, design, and documentation processes.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and building codes, maintaining a secure and compliant working environment.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, researchers, and external stakeholders to align facility operations with organizational goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture or relevant discipline.
  • Proven expertise in industrial electricity, mechanics, HVAC systems, operation of thermal power plants and building automation systems.
  • Experience with CMMS, project management and CAD software a major asset.
  • Experience in research, healthcare or institutional environment an advantage.
  • Significant experience in a management position related to the activities covered by the DST.

Knowledge and skills

  • Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards for building operations and engineering.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage multiple projects and solve complex technical problems.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills to coordinate with various stakeholders.
  • Good knowledge of construction project management, including public tendering process 
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is preferred.
