Exploring new avenues to develop tomorrow’s medical knowledge through an approach that integrates basic and clinical research
Our research units are led by principal investigators who collaborate in a spirit of collegiality and with the vision of bridging the gap between research and patients. They train the next generation of scientists and are independent and creative minds who work tirelessly to improve health.
Yasaman Aghazadeh, research director
The research unit focuses on the recapitulation of human beta cells in a dish using human pluripotent stem cells. Through these studies, we aim to identify factors contributing to the development of diabetes and generate cell therapies for type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, in which the beta cells, located in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans are destroyed. As beta cells secrete insulin to regulate blood glucose, individuals living with T1D have high blood glucose levels. While insulin administration can regulate blood glucose and has saved the lives of millions of people globally, it does not serve as a cure, as it requires daily and life-long injections which are burdensome for patients and their families. Replacing the beta cell mass, by transplantation of donor islets leads to long-term glycemic control, but it is limited by donor scarcity.
Therefore, Yasaman Aghazadeh’s laboratory is interested in harnessing stem cell biology to recapitulate beta cell development and the islet niche in a dish, to study beta cell function and dysfunction, and develop cell therapies for T1D.

Our research has the potential for clinical translation and to improve the quality of life for many living with type 1 diabetes around the globe. We do not take this responsibility lightly and work at every step of the way with passion, ethics, and precision. We utilize Best Practices guidelines for research, animal welfare and safety. We believe in discovery and innovation, reproducibility of our data, scientific exchange, and contributing to our research community at home and abroad.
We strongly believe that EDI principles make us stronger and therefore practice them daily. Our lab is an environment without discrimination, and we welcome individuals from all genders, sexual orientations, and racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.
Land acknowledgement:
I also wish to acknowledge that IRCM (Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal) is situated on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Huron/Wendat, Abenaki, and Anishinaabeg first nations. Aghazadeh lab aims to do all within its power to recruit and support Indigenous students as well as to partner with Indigenous communities in research projects that reflect their priorities.
